Cape Verde is the epicenter of our world spinning out of control—the place where devastating hurricanes are born. Named after the phenomenon that turns winds into storms, intensified by global warming, The Coriolis Effect explores the unsettling bond between humankind and nature. A centipede crossing the desert, a newborn turtle struggling through a garbage-filled beach, a fisherman lost in the fog… Instead of despair, the film turns to the universal will to live and those trying to help. If only we could leave behind our anthropomorphic hubris, this awe-inspiring world where all beings are equally important might offer a way out. As Vasco Martins says: “we are ungrateful guests”, but ones who “deep down love you [the earth] and don’t want to leave.”
