A FILM NIGHT: "A WALL IS A SCREEN"

“A Wall is A Sceen” is an activity that takes the film night experience into the streets. It is a fascinating show performed by a group from Hamburg who travel to various cities around the world mosty at festival times. Now, they are welcomed to Istanbul by DOCUMENTARIST, and that's how they describe their work:
Today many inner cities experience a similar development: residential housing is declining, displaced
by commercial space and businesses. During the daytime, the streets are filled with life, fueled by the
businesses and work places. After business hours the inner city becomes deserted, sometimes the inner
city at night becomes a dangerous place.
The project »A Wall is a Screen« takes advantage of the »nightly downtime« in the vitality of the down
town area. It is a combination of a guided city tour and a film night. The group of participants walks through
downtown and stops at bright walls where short films of various genres are shown. After the end of one
film, the group continues on to the next wall and film. As a guided city tour the project brings residents to
parts of their city they have not been.
As a film night, the project can have surprising effects. A film corresponds with the screening location and
the screening location with the film. The location and passers-by seem to interact with the film, become
part of it. Street noises seem to have an impact on the action of the film/plot.

MODE Istanbul is the Turkish partner to the Youth & Media Programme of the European Cultural Foundation
(ECF) and its Doc Next Network, a unique movement of independent cultural and media organizations
working with young people in Europe. Doc Next Network “documents” contemporary Europe by collecting
and sharing with audiences at various platforms the views and stories of emerging documentary-makers,
opinion-formers and unprivileged young people with limited media access. Doc Next Media Collection,
which includes short films, documentaries and media biographies depicting alternative perspectives
and new ways of storytelling, captures the insights of these young people and contributes to a new
understaning of Europe across its various regions.
A 50-minute Turkish and foreign Doc Next short documentary film selection from this collection, covering
themes such as “spaces and borders”, “heroes and icons”, “the present past”, “dreams and reflections”, “next
nature” and including filmscompleted at Youth MODE Media Workshops, will be screened at Documentarist
2011 on Thursday June 2nd, 2011, at 18:00 in Sismanoglio Megaro. Following the screening, a talk will be held
with the participating Turkish directors and MODE Istanbul representative about their past and current
projects.
